America sits in 1st place in Mexican league tournament

Mexico City, Oct 29 (EFE).- America, which tied Cruz Azul 0-0 over the weekend, is in first place in the Mexican league's 2018 Apertura tournament.

The Mexico City-based club edged out defending champion Santos Laguna for the top spot on goal differential.

America and Santos ended the 14th round of play with 28 points, one more than Cruz Azul.

Argentine striker Julio Furch scored a goal for Santos, which beat Monterrey 1-0.

Monterrey is in sixth place, with 23 points.

Furch leads the Liga MX in scoring with 11 goals, one more than French striker Andre Pierre Gignac, of the Tigres UANL.

In the next round of play, scheduled for Nov. 2-4, Morelia faces the Tigres UANL; Puebla plays Guadalajara; Pachuca takes on Necaxa; America clashes with Toluca; Monterrey plays Veracruz; the Lobos BUAP play Tijuana; the Pumas UNAM take on Cruz Azul; Queretaro takes on Santos Laguna; and Atlas plays Leon.
