America ties Cruz Azul, retakes top spot in Liga MX Apertura tournament

Mexico City, Oct 28 (EFE-EPA).- America played to a 0-0 tie with Cruz Azul, retaking the top spot in the Liga MX's 2018 Apertura tournament.

America got off to a good start in Saturday's match, when Diego Lainez came dangerously close to netting the first goal in a corner kick, to which Cruz Azul responded in the fifth minute with a shot by Elias Hernandez, hitting the bottom of the post.

Cruz Azul then picked up the pace with Edgar Mendez's near score at minute 29, followed by another by Martin Cauteruccio, only to have the ball taken away by Bruno Valdes.

In the second half, the teams were able to keep each other at bay, finishing the game with a 0-0 tie.

America climbed back to the first spot in the standings with eight victories, four ties and 28 points - the same score as runner-up Santos Lagunas - while Cruz Azul remained third with 27 points.

On Sunday, Toluca will go up against Queretaro, while Leon will face Puebla at the end of the championship.
