River Plate blanks Boca Juniors in heated Superliga Argentina showcase match

Buenos Aires, Sep 24 (EFE).- River Plate shut out rival Boca Juniors 2-0 over the weekend at La Bombonera Stadium in Buenos Aires in the Superliga Argentina's "Super Classic."

Gonzalo "Pity" Martinez scored in the 15th minute and Ignacio Scocco added a goal in the 69th minute of Sunday's match for the squad managed by Marcelo Gallardo.

River Plate has dominated the rivalry in recent years, winning 29 consecutive matches.

River Plate also won the Supercopa Argentina in March, defeating Boca Juniors, which is managed by Guillermo Barros Schelotto.

Sunday's match, which was played in front of more than 45,000 spectators at La Bombonera, left both clubs with 10 points, just four behind first-place Atletico Tucuman.

River Plate has won its last two matches after starting with four draws and is now focusing on winning the Copa Libertadores.

Boca Juniors, the two-time defending Superliga Argentina champion, has lost two matches, complicating its chances of winning a third straight championship.
