Defending champion Santos Laguna has much to improve on, Nervo says

Torreon, Mexico, Aug 21 (EFE).- Santos Laguna's Hugo Nervo said the defending Liga MX champions have room for improvement despite being in second place in the Apertura tournament standings.

"We have much to improve on. I hope we can maintain this winning streak and perfect our performance with each match," the Argentine defender said in a press conference Monday in the northern city of Torreon.

Santos has a record of 4-1-0 and 12 points, just one less than Liga MX leader Cruz Azul.

"We're understanding each other more and better. Soccer is a combined effort at every position, so we need to get to know each other and especially in the defense. We talk every day about our opinions on how we can go after the opposition and we're getting to know each other. Match after match we're starting to feel better," the 27-year-old defender said.

On Wednesday, Santos will travel to Tijuana for the sixth round of match play in the championship.

The match will be tough because Tijuana has high standards and will have the home-field advantage, Nervo said.

"They're a great team and they've been proving it since they joined the First Division. I've been following them and I know many of the players because they are from Argentina. Also, the manager, Diego Cocca, who I respect greatly. It'll be tough, they play strong as the home team," Nervo said.

Nervo joined Santos as a replacement for countryman Carlos Izquierdoz, who was the team captain but left for Argentina's Boca Juniors.
